Trash Can project

  1. YO. it's in bullet points so yea.
    - I liked the idea of re-packaging old ideas and seeing the outcome you would get, it was kinda like you had the original idea with a different perspective or take
    - i really liked the abstract shapes for the development from beginning to an end, even though it was kinda random :D
    - an improvement could be trying to change thickness of the plastic at some areas to distort the idea's image
    - another thing that you could have maybe developed on is scrunching the paper irregularly using different size/shape cogs.

  2. Interesting use of materials to create reflective parts of the design, allowing a sense of completion in the curved forms of the structure. The cog-like contraption could be experimented with a bit more, in terms of structure, function and also perhaps more cogs inserted into the "recycling" bin would produce more variations of an end product. As we talked about in the critique, an element of light passing through the contraption is very critical, as the object is suspended in midair. Adding light to the equation prompts ideas of transparent paper, or other media that could be used to 'project' scrambled ideas or forms of imagery through the plastic to re-introduce 'design junk.' The form of the contraption was rather interesting though, and along with colour choice, it is very nostalgic of Zaha Hadid's work.

  3. Dearest Lydia,

Your final design model is captivating and intruiging!
I like your starting point of recycling ideas-not necessarily getting a new idea out of an old one, but getting back an old one in a different, mutated form, allowing that to be an inspiration within itself and a source of a new idea.

You considered to different ways to change the way an idea is percieved, both through cogs crumpling up the paper (tangible distortion, reality), and visual, "artificial" distortion when viewing the paper through the transparent plastic.
The combination of both of this distortions could perhaps have been used for further inspiration.

Your mock-up process with your cog models was very well done as were the beautiful three-dimensional curves in your final model. Further improvement could have been achieved though employing cogs that "matched" the fluid, curved exterior of your trash-can.

Your idea to "hang-up" your trash can via suspended strings creates visual significance and does justice to your very striking design. Well done!

    Antonia
